Oral PathologyAt Chicago Oral Surgery and Implant Center, our surgeons have many years of experience and training diagnosing abnormalities and concerns regarding the mouth, facial structures, salivary glands, and jaw. Our surgeons will perform a comprehensive evaluation, and at times, some abnormalities may require further evaluation with a biopsy or other definitive treatment. Once we have all the information, we can help our patients and their referring dentist determine next steps for treatment, if any. It is incredibly important to see your dentist every year for an evaluation. If you notice any changes in the tissues inside your mouth, a thorough oral exam is needed. Oral surgeons play an important role in the detection, biopsy, and treatment of oral pathology, and our office will collaborate with other healthcare providers, such as your dentist, pathologist and oncologist, where appropriate. If you notice any changes in your mouth, even minor ones, it is important to have those changes looked at right away. Anesthesia options available:Local AnesthesiaLocal anesthesia is commonly used for minor procedures and provides numbness in a targeted area. The patient remains awake and the feelings of discomfort are eliminated. Nitrous OxideNitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a mild sedative that the patient inhales to reduce anxiety. Used in conjunction with local anesthesia, it does not cause the patient to lose consciousness. IV sedationIV sedation is commonly used for more complex surgical procedures or for patients with high dental anxiety. This type of anesthesia, administered through the vein, induces a state of unconsciousness. The patient is unaware of the procedure being performed. |
